The History of 3-Letter Domain Names

3-Letter Domain Names have been among the most popular types of domain names since the inception of the domain naming system. Of the first 24 domains EVER registered, half were 3-letter domains. These first 3-Letter names are:

BBN.com MCC.com DEC.com
SRI.com IBM.com SUN.com
ATT.com GMR.com TEK.com
FMC.com ISC.com NSC.com

If we fast forward to 1998, almost all of the 3-Letter .com domain names were registered, and many were owned by some of the largest companies in the world. By January, all the 3-letter .com domains were registered (all 17,576 combos)! Shortly there after followed the full registration of all the remaining 3-letter combos in .net and .org.

By February, 2004, in a period of 48 hours, all the remaining unregistered 3-letter combos in .info and .biz (over 6,000 domains) were registered by a gentleman who goes by the name of Elequa. Elequa is a powerhouse owner of 3-letter domains with holdings of over 20,000 3-letter domains across the extensions of .com, .net, .org, .info and .biz!

By the summer of 2004, all the remaining 3-letter .us domains were registered by a group of investors after a concerted buyout effort was launched on the Namepros and DNForum forums.

Now that all the 3-letter domains in all the top extensions are in the hands of investors and end-users, prices have continued to grow steadily, with no end in sight.
